For the past few years I have been painting small 4X6 paintings of jazz musicians to sell as small impulse gifts while attending local art shows. In this video I will show you how I used the palette knife to paint in small areas without distorting the image. The main take away from the video is using the tip of the palette knife when painting a small painting.

For my first podcast episode I thought it would be great to paint something simple but unique. For the past three or four workshops that I have conducted, I usually give a small painting demonstration of an apple using a palette knife because most painters connect with still life objects. In this tutorial I show how easy it is to paint a simple and give it a unique and interesting look by painting it with a palette knife. I love the texture the palette knife makes and I love the style that I have developed over the years using the palette knife.  One of my favorite things to do is to teach painting techniques using the palette knife. On Thursday of last week I had the opportunity to teach a 30 min demonstration on how to paint with a palette knife to the  Shelby and Hoover Art Association.

In the demonstration I gave various tips on ways to use different palette knife to achieve different textures and strokes. Most of the strokes and textures in the demonstration were created from the layering technique that I show in the palette knife mini course. I also taught how to create different strokes and lines using the tip of the palette knife.

After showing various painting strokes with different palette knives I did a small quick painting of an apple using the palette knife. I didn’t use a real apple as a reference  I just painted from memory.

I mainly wanted to show the different range of textures in that one demonstration. I also wanted to show how easy it is to create those textures using a palette knife.

During the demonstration I acted as if my light source was coming in from the left leaving the right side of the apple with a dark shadow. This was done just to show how one can create a light and dark value of one color using  a palette knife; same as you would using a brush.

Overall the demonstration went well and I got a chance to meet some cool people. Here are a some of the strokes that I showed in the demonstration.

Here is a video of some of my work that I created with a palette knife that was featured on the cover of a local magazine called Shelbyco.  This magazine is a local magazine that focuses on the lifestyle of the Shelby County Community. I have been creating the cover for the magazine for about a year now. It has been a great opportunity for my career and serve as a great business card when meeting potential art collectors.   

In this video I am painting one of the two paintings that I am submitting for the cover of Shelbyco Magazine for the August issue. I have been working with this magazine for about a year now. I am the exculsive artist for every cover. Most of the paintings are done with a palette knife. In this painting I use a bold yellow background to contrast the red, white and black in the painting. The theme for this issue focuses on local film makers in Shelby County Alabama. In the video you will also see the first painting I created for the project. I sent both images to the editor. Lately I have been painting blue crabs. They are very interesting because of their color and texture. In this video I painted a blue crab with an all white background. The reason I painted the background all white is because I wanted the blue crab to pop on the canvas without any other distractions from the background. I used acrylic paint with a palette knife for the entire painting. I had fun painting the blue crab and I plan to paint several more.

As you know most of my personal paintings are of jazz musicians with a lot of movement and bold colors. Here are two videos of me painting one of my jazz paintings were I used bold strokes and heavy texture using a palette knife.
